Garcinia Cambogia: Is It Safe for Weight Loss?

The tropical fruit Garcinia cambogia is a common weight loss supplement known as the Malabar Tamarind. People say it blocks the ability of your body to get fat and it stops your appetite. 

It may also help to control levels of blood sugar and cholesterol. It is found in bottles on the store shelf and also mixed in dietary products with other ingredients. Is it up to its speculation? Perhaps a little, but it's not valuable.

How It Works

Hydroxy citric acid (HCA), the active ingredient in fruit rind, boosted fat burning and reduced appetite in studies. It appears that your body has blocked the citrate lyase to make fat. It also increases the chemical serotonin concentrations in the brain that can reduce your hunger. However, the actual result of weight loss is not impressive. 

A Journal of Obesity published a review of how people taking garcinia cambogia lost about 2 pounds more in studies than people not taking it. The examinees could not say that the weight loss was due to the addition. 

It could have been of the lower calorie diet and training programs that people typically followed in the studies. Better studies are necessary in order to find out whether HCA really helps people to lose much weight.

Type 2 Diabetes and High Cholesterol

Garcinia cambogia can simplify the use of glucose by your body and your cells need energy. In one study, a mouse with Garcinia Cambogia had lower levels of insulin than mice. 

This is another reason that people with diabetes are interested in it, in addition to weight loss. Your glucose may become dangerously low if you take garcinia cambogia with medicine to control your blood sugar. In some research, garcinia cambogia can also improve cholesterol levels, decrease triglycerides and LDLs ("poor" cholesterol) and increase HDLs ("good" cholesterol). 

However, if you are already on a cholesterol prescription, you should not use it.

Possible Side Effects

When you take garcinia cambogia, you might get:
· Dizziness
· Dry mouth
· Headache
· Upset stomach or diarrhea
In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration warned everyone to stop using a weight-loss product that contained garcinia cambogia because some people taking it got serious liver problems. 

It was not obvious that garcinia cambogia was the blame. The product had other ingredients as well. While some research suggests that your liver is safe, other research says no. Cambogia garcinia can badly interact with:
  • Asthma and allergy medicines such as Accolate and Singulair
  • Diabetes medicines, including pills and insulin
  • Iron, for anemia
  • Pain medicines
  • Prescriptions for psychiatric conditions
  • Statins, drugs that lower cholesterol
  • Warfarin, a blood thinner

You definitely don't want to use it when you're pregnant or nursing, or if you have kidney or liver problems. It is possible that manic symptoms may emerge as a side effect.

To Buy or Not to Buy

As the results of the study are mixed, you should talk to your doctor about whether it is a good idea to take garcinia cambogia. 

It might not help you lose a lot of weight, even if it is safe. It's probably wiser for healthy food or exercise DVD to spend your money.
